A copper mine in southeastern Utah has restarted operations with an ambitious goal: proving that mining and refining can be run through a unified autonomous operating system.

Mariana Minerals has resumed production at Copper One, the world’s first mining operation where autonomous mining systems, refining controls, and capital project management tools are being deployed together through a single software platform, known as MarianaOS.

The restart marks the beginning of Mariana’s effort to bring end-to-end autonomy to copper production, from ore extraction in the pit to the production of high-purity copper cathode.

What Makes Copper One Different

Mining companies have used various forms of automation for years, with autonomous haul trucks, remotely controlled equipment, and automated plant controls already in use at some operations worldwide.

Copper One takes a different approach.

Instead of deploying automation as a collection of separate technologies, Mariana has connected mining, refining, maintenance, logistics, planning, and project execution through a single software architecture. The company believes this level of integration can reduce operational variability and improve decision-making across the entire site.

The goal is to create a system capable of continuously analyzing data from every stage of production and making operational adjustments in real time.

How the Autonomous System Works

The autonomous systems currently operating at Copper One cover several core functions.

Haul trucks move material throughout the site without drivers, drilling equipment automatically executes drilling sequences, robotic systems conduct inspections in the open pit, and reagent additions in the refinery are adjusted automatically based on operating conditions.

These activities are coordinated through MarianaOS, which receives data from equipment, processing facilities, maintenance systems, and operational planning tools.

The platform uses machine learning and reinforcement learning models to evaluate performance and optimize decisions involving fleet movements, drill programs, plant throughput, material blending, energy consumption, and reagent usage.

Human operators remain involved in supervision, maintenance, and safety oversight through digital control centres.

Why Mariana Chose Copper One

Copper One offered a rare opportunity to deploy autonomous technologies at an active operation rather than starting a new development project.

The site has been producing copper for more than 15 years and includes an open-pit mine, heap bioleaching facilities, and a hydrometallurgical refinery that uses solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce copper cathode.

Mariana acquired the operation in late 2025 and has since been working alongside the existing site team to install and integrate autonomous systems across the property.

Because the mine and refinery were already operating and permitted before the acquisition, the company can better focus on deploying technology and driving production growth.

A Test Case for the Future of Copper Production

Copper One is a proving ground for a software-first approach to mineral production.

Mariana plans to increase site output to 50,000 metric tons of high-purity copper cathode annually by 2030, with future expansion plans also including processing recycled copper scrap alongside mined material at the refinery.Ultimately, Copper One is intended to demonstrate how autonomy, artificial intelligence, and integrated software can be applied across an entire mining and refining operation. If successful, the project could provide a model for how future mineral assets are developed and operated in an era of growing copper demand and a shrinking skilled labour pool.
