Traction Uranium Corp.

Results from the gravity survey on the Hearty Bay project has identified several zones of possible alteration near head of mineralized boulder train. This has set the stage for the upcoming drill program this winter.

CALGARY, Alberta, Jan. 30, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Traction Uranium Corp. (CSE: TRAC) (OTC: TRCTF) (FRA: Z1K) (the “Company” or “Traction”) is pleased to announce that the 2024 winter gravity survey at the Hearty Bay project has been completed. A total of 2155 stations were measured, the grid starting at the head of the two radioactive boulder trains and covering both up-ice directions and to the east, which is interpreted to be an older ice direction based on glacial features to the south.

The survey has identified a number of gravity lows, several located northeast (up-ice) of the boulder train, but slightly more east than where the historic drilling was targeting. These targets are up to 500m long with the three anomalous areas on the east side lining up along a possible north-south fault system. This gives Traction and F3 excellent targets for the upcoming sonic drill program. This appears to be intersected by a north-west trending feature marked by gravity lows and a distinctive magnetic signature. This complex setting, nicely defined by the new gravity survey, will hopefully lead Traction and F3 to discovering the source of the radioactive boulder trains (boulders grading up to 8.23% U3O8) that has eluded exploration programs in the past.

The upcoming drill program is slated to start near the end of February – early March and will consist of approximately 2,000 metres.

The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that Gem Diamonds Limited (LON:GEMD) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

When Is Debt A Problem?

Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Gem Diamonds Carry?

The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Gem Diamonds had debt of US$14.7m at the end of June 2021, a reduction from US$23.6m over a year. But it also has US$33.9m in cash to offset that, meaning it has US$19.2m net cash.

debt-equity-history-analysisdebt-equity-history-analysis
debt-equity-history-analysis

A Look At Gem Diamonds' Liabilities

We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Gem Diamonds had liabilities of US$43.1m falling due within a year, and liabilities of US$112.0m due beyond that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of US$33.9m as well as receivables valued at US$6.55m due within 12 months. So its liabilities total US$114.6m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

This is a mountain of leverage relative to its market capitalization of US$116.4m. Should its lenders demand that it shore up the balance sheet, shareholders would likely face severe dilution. Despite its noteworthy liabilities, Gem Diamonds boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load!

Even more impressive was the fact that Gem Diamonds grew its EBIT by 406% over twelve months. If maintained that growth will make the debt even more manageable in the years ahead. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Gem Diamonds's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. Gem Diamonds may have net cash on the balance sheet, but it is still interesting to look at how well the business converts its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, because that will influence both its need for, and its capacity to manage debt. In the last three years, Gem Diamonds created free cash flow amounting to 4.2% of its EBIT, an uninspiring performance. That limp level of cash conversion undermines its ability to manage and pay down debt.

Summing up

Although Gem Diamonds's balance sheet isn't particularly strong, due to the total liabilities, it is clearly positive to see that it has net cash of US$19.2m. And it impressed us with its EBIT growth of 406% over the last year. So we don't have any problem with Gem Diamonds's use of debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet – far from it. Be aware that Gem Diamonds is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those shouldn't be ignored…

When all is said and done, sometimes its easier to focus on companies that don't even need debt. Readers can access a list of growth stocks with zero net debt 100% free, right now.

The WisdomTree Global exU.S. Quality Dividend Growth ETF (DNL) was launched on 06/16/2006, and is a smart beta exchange traded fund designed to offer broad exposure to the World ETFs category of the market.

What Are Smart Beta ETFs?

Products that are based on market cap weighted indexes, which are strategies designed to reflect a specific market segment or the market as a whole, have traditionally dominated the ETF industry.

Investors who believe in market efficiency should consider market cap indexes, as they replicate market returns in a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way.

If you're the kind of investor who would rather try and beat the market through good stock selection, then smart beta funds are your best choice; this fund class is known for tracking non-cap weighted strategies.

Based on specific fundamental characteristics, or a combination of such, these indexes attempt to pick stocks that have a better chance of risk-return performance.

Even though this space provides many choices to investors–think one of the simplest methodologies like equal-weighting and more complicated ones like fundamental and volatility/momentum based weighting–not all have been able to deliver first-rate results.

Fund Sponsor & Index

Managed by Wisdomtree, DNL has amassed assets over $417.98 million, making it one of the larger ETFs in the World ETFs. DNL seeks to match the performance of the WisdomTree Global ex-U.S. Quality Dividend Growth Index before fees and expenses.

The WisdomTree Global ex-U.S. Quality Dividend Growth Index is a fundamentally weighted index that measures the performance of dividend paying stocks with growth characteristics in the developed and emerging markets outside of the United States.

Cost & Other Expenses

Since cheaper funds tend to produce better results than more expensive funds, assuming all other factors remain equal, it is important for investors to pay attention to an ETF's expense ratio.

Operating expenses on an annual basis are 0.58% for DNL, making it on par with most peer products in the space.

It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 1.89%.

Sector Exposure and Top Holdings

While ETFs offer diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk, a deep look into a fund's holdings is a valuable exercise. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

Looking at individual holdings, Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO) accounts for about 4.59% of total assets, followed by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd and Unilever Plc (ULVR).

The top 10 holdings account for about 36.72% of total assets under management.

Performance and Risk

So far this year, DNL has added about 7.15%, and is up roughly 17.72% in the last one year (as of 10/13/2021). During this past 52-week period, the fund has traded between $32.44 and $43.87.

DNL has a beta of 0.82 and standard deviation of 22.27% for the trailing three-year period, which makes the fund a medium risk choice in the space. With about 276 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk.

Alternatives

WisdomTree Global exU.S. Quality Dividend Growth ETF is a reasonable option for investors seeking to outperform the World ETFs segment of the market. However, there are other ETFs in the space which investors could consider.

IShares Core Dividend Growth ETF (DGRO) tracks Morningstar US Dividend Growth Index and the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (VIG) tracks NASDAQ US Dividend Achievers Select Index. IShares Core Dividend Growth ETF has $20.03 billion in assets, Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF has $61.19 billion. DGRO has an expense ratio of 0.08% and VIG charges 0.06%.

Investors looking for cheaper and lower-risk options should consider traditional market cap weighted ETFs that aim to match the returns of the World ETFs.

Insiders who purchased PepinNini Minerals Limited (ASX:PNN) shares in the past 12 months are unlikely to be deeply impacted by the stock's 13% decline over the past week. Even after accounting for the recent loss, the AU$744k worth of stock purchased by them is now worth AU$989k or in other words, their investment continues to give good returns.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

See our latest analysis for PepinNini Minerals

PepinNini Minerals Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The insider Peter Proksa made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$506k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.54 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than AU$0.38 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid AU$744k for 2.60m shares. But they sold 128.50k shares for AU$57k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by PepinNini Minerals insiders. Their average price was about AU$0.29. It is certainly positive to see that insiders have invested their own money in the company. However, we do note that they were buying at significantly lower prices than today's share price. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

PepinNini Minerals is not the only stock insiders are buying. So take a peek at this free list of growing companies with insider buying.

Does PepinNini Minerals Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. PepinNini Minerals insiders own about AU$5.8m worth of shares. That equates to 34% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At PepinNini Minerals Tell Us?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded PepinNini Minerals shares in the last quarter. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year. Overall we don't see anything to make us think PepinNini Minerals insiders are doubting the company, and they do own shares. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for PepinNini Minerals (of which 2 don't sit too well with us!) you should know about.

Of course PepinNini Minerals may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of high quality companies.

For the purposes of this article, insiders are those individuals who report their transactions to the relevant regulatory body. We currently account for open market transactions and private dispositions, but not derivative transactions.

Vancouver, British Columbia–(Newsfile Corp. – October 6, 2021) – Quaterra Resources Inc. (TSXV: QTA) (OTCQB: QTRRF) (the "Company") today announced positive results from a ten-hole core drilling program totaling 5,147 feet (1,569 meters) that was recently completed. The ten-hole program was designed to assess the likelihood that further drilling would upgrade portions of the resource from Inferred to Indicated and expand the overall size of the current resource. Mr. Travis Naugle, CEO states, "We believe that additional drilling could accomplish these exciting objectives." These results are further discussed below and outlined in Table 1 below.

Three holes (QM-319, QM-320, and QM-328) were drilled on the north to northwestern edge of the current resource. Each hole intersected oxide and chalcocite mineralization. Significant intercepts include drill hole QM-320 (31.1 m @ 0.58% Cu, including 22.6 m @ 0.70% Cu); QM-328 (23.5 m @ 0.44% Cu); and QM-319 (10.8 m @ 0.14% Cu). Each drill hole contains additional acid soluble copper intercept (Table 1).

Holes QM-326 and QM-327, drilled on the southern edge of the current oxide resource (Figure 1), each intersected near surface oxide mineralization. Significant intercepts include 6.7 m @ 0.27% Cu and 7.3 m @ 0.70% copper from QM-326 and QM-327, respectively. Both holes also indicate the potential for additional oxide resource expansion to the south and southeast (Figure 2).

Drill holes QM-321 and QM-322 were drilled on the south/southeastern edge of the current oxide resource. Both drill holes intersected near surface oxide mineralization; QM-321 intersected 13.7 m @ 0.17% copper and QM-322 intersected 31.1 m @ 0.11% Cu. Both drill holes also indicate the potential for an additional oxide resource to the south. In addition, QM-322 was collared on a legacy MacArthur sub-grade stockpile, from which 12.3 m @ 0.13% copper was identified. The MacArthur sub-grade stockpile has not previously been sampled but based on these results, the Company may consider evaluating it for additional resource potential.

It is expected that the above results could increase the resource (Figure 2) and upgrade a portion of the current resource from inferred to measured/indicated status. The MacArthur resource estimate is in the process of being updated by Independent Mining Consultants (IMC); it is expected to be completed before the end of 2021.

Two additional drill holes (QM-323 and QM-324) were drilled to explore for additional oxide resource farther east and infill from previous oxide intercepts in this area. Each drill hole identified short, scattered oxide intercepts, and identified additional chalcocite and chalcopyrite mineralization. QM-323 includes 24.4 m @ 0.20% copper in the form of chalcopyrite and QM-324 includes 9.8 m @ 0.39% copper in the form of chalcocite and chalcopyrite. Please see Table 1 for additional intercepts. The potential for additional drilling in this area is under further evaluation.

Drill holes QM-319 and QM-320 were drilled to depths of 243.8 m and 362.3 m, respectively, to test under-drilled induced polarization geophysical anomalies. Both drill holes intersected zones of primary mineralization, occurring as wispy quartz-sericite-biotite-sulfide veinlets/vein haloes, which are commonly associated with porphyry-style mineralization in the Yerington District. These two drill holes provide important guidance for primary sulfide drilling in future programs.

Quality Assurance and Control

All drilling described is from core, contracted to National EWP, Elko, Nevada. Core samples were either sawed or split by SPS personnel in Yerington, Nevada and shipped to Skyline Assayers and Laboratories in Tucson, Arizona for sample preparation. Copper analyses were assayed using their "SEA-Cu" (total copper) "SEACuSEQ" (sequential copper leach) procedure with a 50 ppm detection limit. Commercially prepared standards and blanks are inserted by SPS at 50-foot intervals to insure precision of results as a quality control measure. SPS has a chain of custody program to ensure sample security during all stages of sample collection, cutting, shipping, and storage.

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. Long term Cameco Corporation (TSE:CCO) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 163% in five years. It's also good to see the share price up 18% over the last quarter.

Since the stock has added CA$418m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

View our latest analysis for Cameco

Given that Cameco didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last 5 years Cameco saw its revenue shrink by 7.4% per year. On the other hand, the share price done the opposite, gaining 21%, compound, each year. It's a good reminder that expectations about the future, not the past history, always impact share prices. Still, we are a bit cautious in this kind of situation.

The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

If you are thinking of buying or selling Cameco stock, you should check out this FREE detailed report on its balance sheet.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Cameco, it has a TSR of 178% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Cameco shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 118% over one year. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 23% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Cameco you should be aware of.

BHP Group BHP recently entered into a deal to supply nickel sulphate to Prime Planet Energy & Solutions (“PPES”), one of Japan’s leading lithium-ion battery producers. This will enable Prime Planet Energy & Solutions to develop lower carbon batteries, which will be supplied to Electric Vehicle (“EV”) manufacturers including Toyota Motor Corporation TM.

To this effect, a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) has been signed between BHP Group, Prime Planet Energy & Solutions and Toyota Tsusho Corporation. Notably, Prime Planet Energy & Solutions is a joint venture between Toyota Motor and Panasonic Corporation. Toyota Tsusho Corporation is a general trading company that is part of the Toyota group.

Per the MOU, BHP Group will supply nickel sulphate to Prime Planet Energy & Solutions from its newly constructed Nickel West facility in Western Australia. Nickel West is one of the most sustainable nickel producers in the world. On Oct 1, BHP Group announced that it has produced the first nickel sulphate crystals from the plant. The plant is the first of its kind in Australia and will produce 100,000 tons of nickel sulphate per year, when fully operational. Its production will be enough to make 700,000 electric vehicle batteries each year.

BHP Group, along with Prime Planet Energy & Solutions and Toyota Tsusho Corporation, is making every effort to create a more sustainable and transparent industry, which is working collectively to lift standards and reduce emissions. According to the terms of the MoU, the parties will seek to identify ways to make the Japanese battery supply chain more sustainable by lowering carbon emissions in battery value chains. They will also explore the possibility of recycling battery scrap and used batteries at BHP Group’s Nickel West for further processing and production of nickel bearing products.

Amid the heightening climate-change concerns, development of batteries used to power EVs is gaining utmost importance. This, in turn, has fueled demand for metals, particularly copper and nickel, utilized in the production of batteries. Riding on this, demand for nickel in batteries is estimated to surge more than 500% over the next decade. Thus, BHP Group has been investing in its Nickel West facilities. The company is one of the world’s leading nickel suppliers to the battery metals market, with 85% of its nickel metal currently sold to the battery market. It delivers some of the world’s most sustainable and lowest carbon emission nickel to customers. BHP Group is working toward its strategy of focusing on commodities (copper, nickel and potash) that will help it capitalize on growing global trends such as decarbonisation, electrification population growth, rising living standards in the developing countries among others.

Earlier in July, BHP Group entered into an agreement with Tesla TSLA to supply nickel from the Nickel West mine. In addition to the supply agreement, BHP and Tesla will collaborate on ways to make the battery supply chain more sustainable with a focus on end-to-end raw material traceability using blockchain and technical exchange for battery raw materials production. The companies will also focus on promoting the importance of sustainability in the resources sector, including identifying partners who are most aligned with BHP and Tesla’s principles and battery value chains. BHP Group will also collaborate with Tesla on energy storage solutions to identify opportunities to lower carbon emissions in their respective operations through increased use of renewable energy paired with battery storage.

BHP Group’s shares have fallen 18.4% so far this year compared with the industry’s decline of 8.9%. This can primarily be attributed to the recent plunge in iron ore prices due to weak demand in China on account of its intensified curbs on steel production and slowdown across its property sector. In the third quarter of 2021, iron ore plummeted 49% — the first quarterly loss since the first quarter of 2020.

(Bloomberg) — BHP Group is in talks about buying into a copper project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, marking a dramatic departure from the world’s biggest mining company’s policy of shunning risky jurisdictions.

Most Read from Bloomberg

The Melbourne-based miner is in early discussions with billionaire Robert Friedland’s Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. to buy into Western Foreland, a huge exploration territory that neighbors Ivanhoe’s Kamoa-Kakula mine, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified as the talks are private. There’s no guarantee BHP will agree a deal with Ivanhoe, and other mining companies are also interested in the project, the people said.

Ivanhoe said in an emailed response that it doesn’t comment on specific negotiations. A spokesperson for BHP said the company declines to comment on market rumor and speculation. Ivanhoe shares rose as much as 10% on Monday, the biggest intraday advance since June last year.

A foray into a nation emerging from decades of conflict would mark a shift in strategy for BHP, which has operated mainly in more developed countries in recent years. The company sold its last mining asset in Africa — the rights to develop an iron ore deposit in Guinea — to Friedland in 2019 as it focused on Australia, Canada and Chile.

During the 18-month tenure of Chief Executive Officer Mike Henry, BHP’s position has softened. There’s a realization that to get access to the best mineral deposits for the global energy transition, the company needs to operate in more risky jurisdictions. BHP shifted its exploration headquarters to the financing hub of Toronto this year.

BHP is especially bullish on copper, a metal used for wiring that’s crucial to decarbonization. Like its major rivals, BHP is expecting a surge in demand, while long-term supply looks constrained amid a lack of new mine development and as growth in top producer Chile slows amid deteriorating ore quality and huge investment burdens.

Congo Bet

While BHP has already shown more appetite for risk by building a stake in Ecuador copper mine developer SolGold Plc, making a bet on the DRC is a significant step further. While the country is the biggest source of cobalt and Africa’s largest producer of copper, corruption in the industry has kept the nation among the poorest in the world.

The challenges of the DRC are highlighted by Ivanhoe’s Kamoa-Kakula mine, which started operating earlier this year. While it’s one of the highest grade copper mines in the world, with the potential to become one of the biggest, Chinese companies helped fund it as Western rivals were deterred by the risks associated with the country.

Ivanhoe points to the presence of BlackRock Inc. and Fidelity on its shareholder register as underscoring the transparency of the Vancouver-based firm’s operations in the DRC.

Friedland, who is Ivanhoe’s founder and executive co-chairman, made his fortune from a Canadian nickel project and was behind a massive copper-gold discovery in Mongolia that’s now operated by Rio Tinto Group.

MELBOURNE, October 02, 2021–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Rio Tinto is supporting iron ore rail car manufacturing in Western Australia with a commitment to use local suppliers to build ore rail cars for its Pilbara mining operations.

A tender will soon be released to the local market for an initial purchase of 50 ore rail cars, followed by an ongoing commitment of 10 ore cars a year for the next five years.

The tender will be released through the Rio Tinto Buy Local portal, a resource dedicated to making local suppliers aware of opportunities to partner with Rio Tinto and be part of our supply chain.

Western Australia has been an important part of Rio Tinto’s history for more than 50 years as the company built a world-class iron ore business. In 2020, the company spent AUD$7.5 billion with more than 2,000 local businesses based in Western Australia.

Rio Tinto is also part of the WA Government’s iron ore rail car action group, launched as part of the WA Recovery Plan to develop a competitive iron ore rail car manufacturing industry in Western Australia.

Rio Tinto’s commitment to bring ore rail car manufacturing back to WA supports the action group’s vision to develop WA’s ore rail car manufacturing capability and support the State’s economic recovery.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief executive Simon Trott said: "Building Rio Tinto’s ore rail cars here in WA will support local manufacturing and create jobs for West Australians.

"Rio Tinto is proud to lead the way in building iron ore rail cars in WA, in line with the vision of State Government’s iron ore rail car action group.

"I look forward to partnering with local businesses to support and grow the local manufacturing industry in WA.

"Ore cars are a critical part of our mining operations and building capacity to manufacture ore cars locally in WA will deliver significant benefits for Rio Tinto and the WA economy."

Premier Mark McGowan said: "This is a pleasing outcome and I commend Rio Tinto for taking the first step and committing to our local steel manufacturing industry which will support more jobs for Western Australians.

"Rio Tinto’s commitment is a positive result off the back of the State Government’s independent pre-feasibility study, which identified initiatives for the manufacture, refurbishment and maintenance of iron ore railcar wagons.

"This was about securing an ongoing pipeline of work for the long term manufacture of iron ore wagons and critical rail wagon parts, which will deliver jobs and economic benefit for the State into the future.

"Rio Tinto’s purchase of Western Australian made railcars that will be used right here in our State is something I encourage other iron ore companies operating in WA to get on board with and increase local content and local jobs."

As OPEC+ meets once again next Monday, speculation has been rife regarding the oil group’s intentions to bring more crude into the market. Whilst prices are still close to the $80 per barrel mark, with Brent trading around $78 per barrel and WTI trending around $74.5 per barrel, the first US inventory stock build since late July and news of OPEC+ laggards (Russia and Kazakhstan) ramping up supply has provided some downside for prices. At the same time, exorbitantly high gas prices driving gas-to-oil switching in Asia and the US dollar weakening are largely offsetting those factors.

After a long slumber, bears have finally awakened. Their wrath is being felt across all risk assets, and we’re officially in the midst of the biggest correction in the S&P 500 for the year. Granted, we’re still only down 5% from the peak, but in as low a volatility environment as we’ve seen this year, that qualifies as the worst whack of 2021. And yet, despite the mayhem, I’m sharing three stocks to buy.

When the market backdrop gets as ugly as it is now, I get extremely selective on new trades. Only the best setups make the cut, and even then, I sometimes pass until the S&P 500 starts to show signs of bottoming.

Today’s trio all boast relative strength and uptrends that remain intact. What’s more, they all saw increasing momentum on the last advance, despite a sinking market.

InvestorPlace – Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips

That’s the pitch. Here are the picks:

  • Cameco (NYSE:CCJ)

  • Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER)

  • Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO)

Let’s take a closer look at each chart to chronicle the recent muscle-flexing. Then, we’ll map out a path to profit.

Stocks to Buy: Cameco (CCJ)

Cameco Corp (CCJ) stock chart with bullish breakout pattern.Cameco Corp (CCJ) stock chart with bullish breakout pattern.

If you’re going to buy something while the sky is falling, it certainly helps if it doesn’t have a strong correlation to the stock market. Lately, shares of Canadian uranium producer, Cameco Corp, have been moving to the beat of their own drum. Sometimes CCJ stock moves with the S&P 500; sometimes it doesn’t. As a result of the mixed relationship, CCJ has a 10-week correlation to the market near zero.

This is the type of stock I’d be willing to buy in large part because further market weakness doesn’t automatically mean CCJ will suffer. But that’s not all. The price chart looks bullish. We just saw nearly a month of rising prices that took CCJ from $15 to $26. Volume surged, adding legitimacy to the move. And now, we have our first pullback. It’s been deep, yes, but we’re still above the rising 50-day moving average.

I like selling puts to bet CCJ will stay above $17 for the next month.

The Trade: Sell the November $17 naked put for 50 cents.

Uber Technologies (UBER)

Uber Technologies (UBER) stock chart with bullish retracement.Uber Technologies (UBER) stock chart with bullish retracement.

Source: The thinkorswim® platform from TD Ameritrade

Three weeks ago, I wouldn’t have touched Uber with a 10-foot pole. But much has changed.

The primary reason for my about-face was the massive gap on Sept. 21 that single-handedly reversed the downtrend. Volume eclipsed 100 million shares, marking the highest volume session of the year. This wasn’t some retail-driven micro-rally but an institutional-led influx.

Given the strength of the ramp, I’m inclined to believe the new uptrend will have staying power. And that makes me a buyer of dips.

Over the past three days, UBER stock has retreated three sessions, ending with a doji on Thursday. This morning’s gap higher is confirming a new upswing is beginning. I would build a directional play in a healthier environment, but to respect the broader market correction, we’re taking the higher probability route with a naked put play.

If you think UBER can stay above $37.50 for the next month, enter the following play.

The Trade: Sell the November $37.50 puts for 50 cents.

Stocks to Buy: Marathon Oil (MRO)

Marathon Oil (MRO) stock chart with bullish breakout.Marathon Oil (MRO) stock chart with bullish breakout.
Marathon Oil (MRO) stock chart with bullish breakout.

If there’s one sector that has shone brightest during the recent drama, it’s energy. And that makes it an obvious place to look for stocks to buy.

You can thank the strength in crude oil for the sector’s spunk. Oil prices are back to testing major resistance near $75 and haven’t budged in recent days, despite the thrashing suffered by equities.

There are a lot of good-looking energy stocks right now, but I’d suggest taking a good look at Marathon Oil. Its share price is flirting with a major breakout over $14. This zone has provided stiff resistance for the past five months. Once we take it out, I suspect buyers will come running.

Additionally, the cheap price tag of MRO stock makes it a great candidate for selling puts. The margin requirement is low, and the potential return is juicy.

The Trade: Sell the November $12 naked put for 36 cents.

The post 3 Stocks to Buy Despite the Market Mayhem appeared first on InvestorPlace.

Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

So should Alliance Resources (ASX:AGS) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

Check out our latest analysis for Alliance Resources

Does Alliance Resources Have A Long Cash Runway?

You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. As at June 2021, Alliance Resources had cash of AU$3.3m and no debt. In the last year, its cash burn was AU$3.6m. That means it had a cash runway of around 11 months as of June 2021. That's quite a short cash runway, indicating the company must either reduce its annual cash burn or replenish its cash. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

debt-equity-history-analysisdebt-equity-history-analysis
debt-equity-history-analysis

How Is Alliance Resources' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

In the last year, Alliance Resources did book revenue of AU$56k, but its revenue from operations was less, at just AU$6.0k. We don't think that's enough operating revenue for us to understand too much from revenue growth rates, since the company is growing off a low base. So we'll focus on the cash burn, today. It's possible that the 13% reduction in cash burn over the last year is evidence of management tightening their belts as cash reserves deplete. Admittedly, we're a bit cautious of Alliance Resources due to its lack of significant operating revenues. So we'd generally prefer stocks from this list of stocks that have analysts forecasting growth.

Can Alliance Resources Raise More Cash Easily?

While Alliance Resources is showing a solid reduction in its cash burn, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.

Since it has a market capitalisation of AU$34m, Alliance Resources' AU$3.6m in cash burn equates to about 10% of its market value. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.

Is Alliance Resources' Cash Burn A Worry?

On this analysis of Alliance Resources' cash burn, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap was reassuring, while its cash runway has us a bit worried. We don't think its cash burn is particularly problematic, but after considering the range of factors in this article, we do think shareholders should be monitoring how it changes over time. On another note, Alliance Resources has 4 warning signs (and 2 which are concerning) we think you should know about.

Of course Alliance Resources may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of companies boasting high return on equity, or this list of stocks that insiders are buying.

MELBOURNE, Sept 30 (Reuters) – Rio Tinto Plc has declared force majeure on some copper cathode contracts after shutting the smelter at its Kennecott mine in the United States following an accident on last week, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

"The work needed to safely restart operations at the smelter is currently being assessed. We are working closely with our customers to minimise any impacts," the spokesperson said in emailed comments.

Rio Tinto said it had declared force majeure on some contracts for copper cathode and acid after the Kennecott smelter was shut due to a release of molten copper on Sept. 21.

Force majeure is triggered when a company cannot meet its contract obligations due to unforeseen circumstances.

MELBOURNE, September 29, 2021–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Rio Tinto has published its first report on progress in improving Communities and Social Performance (CSP) practices, as the company works to rebuild trust and relationships with Traditional Owners following the destruction of the Juukan Gorge rock shelters in Western Australia.

As part of efforts to increase transparency in its approach to cultural heritage protection, Rio Tinto has engaged with investors to develop reporting that details the company’s work to improve its CSP practices and outcomes.

The report details progress made to 30 July 2021 in areas such as Traditional Owner partnerships and agreement modernisation in Western Australia; the introduction of new CSP structures and practices across the company; improved governance; and increasing social expertise within the business.

Importantly, it includes direct feedback from Traditional Owner groups regarding commitments made by the company as part of the Board Review of Cultural Heritage Management in August 2020.

Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm said "We are working hard to rebuild trust and meaningful relationships with the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (PKKP) people and other Traditional Owners across Australia. We understand this will take time and consistent effort, but our absolute focus is on improving our engagement with Indigenous Peoples and host communities so that we can better understand their priorities and concerns, minimise our impacts, and responsibly manage cultural heritage.

"We thank those Traditional Owners who generously shared their feedback and perspectives. While their insights confirm we have much more to do, feedback like this is vital to shaping relationships that are respectful, genuine and inclusive.

"We know that we cannot change the past. But we can continue to seek out, listen to and respect different voices and perspectives, to ensure that in the future, cultural heritage sites of significance are treated with the care they deserve. And the changes we make should improve, over time, our engagement with Indigenous and First Nations communities in every region where we operate worldwide."

Some of the actions outlined in the report include:

  • Ongoing remediation work of the Juukan Gorge in consultation with the PKKP people.

  • The commencement of agreement modernisation discussions with ten Pilbara Traditional Owner groups and their representatives.

  • A detailed review of heritage sites that Rio Tinto manages in the Pilbara to ensure there are no other sites of exceptional cultural significance within the company’s existing mine plans.

  • Building social performance capacity, capability and governance across the company. There are now more than 300 Communities and Social Performance professionals working on 60 sites in 35 countries, up from 250 professionals in 2020.

  • Important steps to grow Indigenous leadership to help better understand host communities in the future. This includes a $50 million investment to retain, attract and grow Indigenous professionals and leaders in our Australian business.

  • Enhancing cultural awareness training, with all frontline staff undertaking e-learning or face-to-face training with Indigenous Australians.

  • Progressing the establishment of an Australian Advisory Group to help better manage policies and positions that are important to Indigenous Australians and the business; and

  • A commitment to work with Traditional Owner groups to co-design and implement leading practice cultural heritage management.

Rio Tinto will integrate further reporting into its full-year reporting suite, complemented by additional disclosures where appropriate. Further consultation with a broad range of investors and other stakeholders will continue to assist in developing these disclosures.

(Adds details from interview)

By Ernest Scheyder

Sept 29 (Reuters) – A key Native American leader in Arizona declined to meet Rio Tinto Plc's chief executive this week, the latest roadblock in the mining giant's search for a "win-win" compromise to build its controversial Resolution Copper project.

The visit from Rio's Jakob Stausholm to the state underscores Resolution's importance to the Anglo-Australian company, which has spent more than $2 billion on the project in the past decade but has yet to produce any copper, the red metal used in electric vehicles and other electronics.

Rio hopes the mine will eventually produce more than 40 billion pounds of copper. First, it must win approval from the San Carlos Apache tribe, an unlikely prospect as Chairman Terry Rambler and other tribal leaders have long signaled that their opposition centers on religious concerns and cannot be assuaged by economic incentives.

Stausholm, in his first visit to Arizona since becoming CEO in January, said he is hopeful the two sides can reach an agreement that will allow the project to go ahead.

"We're trying to find a win-win. I do think that's in everyone's interest. But I reckon that we still have work to do," Stausholm told Reuters in a video interview on Wednesday from Phoenix, the state's capital.

"If we haven't explained ourselves well enough, then we need to explain ourselves better."

The complex debate is a harbinger of land battles to come as the United States aims to build more EVs, which use twice as much copper as vehicles with internal combustion engines. The Resolution mine could meet about 25% of projected U.S. demand for the metal.

The Arizona dispute centers on Oak Flat Campground, which the San Carlos Apache consider home to deities. The underground mine would cause a crater that would swallow the site.

U.S. President Joe Biden – who received a critical endorsement from the San Carlos Apache during his presidential bid – put the project temporarily on hold in March.

A bill under consideration in the U.S. Congress would undo 2014 legislation that approved a land transfer to give Rio access to the copper deposit.

Stausholm said he tried unsuccessfully to meet with Rambler during his Arizona visit. Rambler told Reuters he would rather spend his time lobbying Congress to block the land transfer.

"If they wanted to meet they should have met way before anything was done" in 2014, Rambler said. "My focus now is on changing that law."

WHEN TO TALK?

The two sides disagree about how and when to negotiate. Whereas Rambler and other Native American leaders said the proper time for consultation was in 2014, Stausholm said he sees that process just beginning.

"You can only get communities comfortable if they really understand, if they feel we're transparent," said Stausholm, an accountant by training from Denmark who previously worked for shipping giant Maersk and Royal Dutch Shell .

Stausholm declined to say whether Rio could eventually walk away from the project, though he acknowledged the company wants tribal consent.

"The first stage is dialogue, and that's why I'm putting myself here in Arizona," he said. "You can't conclude anything at this point in time."

Stausholm hinted that changes were possible to the mine's design plan that might make it palatable to Native Americans, though he declined to be specific. "We have to get through the dialogue and find out what the pressure points are," he said.

Stausholm added that Rio would smelt any copper produced at the mine inside the United States. Opponents have said they fear Rio would export the copper for use by China or another nation.

BHP, which is a minority partner in the project, was not immediately available to comment.

Toronto, Ontario–(Newsfile Corp. – September 29, 2021) – Purepoint Uranium Group Inc. (TSXV: PTU) (OTCQB: PTUUF) ("Purepoint" or the "Company") announced the commencement of its Fall drill program within the northeastern margin of Saskatchewan's Athabasca Basin in Canada.

"The focus of the drill program is our 100% owned Henday Lake project that we have been eager to advance for some time now," Scott Frostad, Purepoint's VP of Exploration stated. "This will be Purepoint's first drill program on the project following our airborne electromagnetic and ground gravity surveys that were completed to ensure the optimal targets are tested".

Highlights:

  • Purepoint is planning three initial diamond drill holes at an average depth of approximately 400 metres each.

  • The targeted electromagnetic conductor lies within an east-west trending magnetic low, considered to represent pelitic basement rocks, a typical host rock for economic uranium mineralization.

  • The Huskie Uranium deposit, discovered by Denison in 2017, is due west of the Henday Lake project and is associated with an east-west trending magnetic low.

  • Depending on initial results and timing, Purepoint can extend this drilling program if appropriate.

  • Work to date on the project is outlined in detail in an NI 43-101 compliant technical report which can be found on the Company's website.

Henday Lake

The 100% owned Henday Lake property is 1,029 hectares in size and consists of 2 claims. This property is located nine kilometres northwest of Orano's Midwest Lake deposit (41 million lbs. U3O8) and ten kilometres west of Rio Tinto's Roughrider Deposit (57 million lbs. U3O8).

Only one drill hole is known to have been drilled on the property. Hole HLH8-71 was drilled by Cogema Resources (now Orano Resources Canada Inc.) in 1998 and encountered a steeply dipping, strongly graphitic fault gouge at the bottom of the hole. The claims rest within a magnetic low believed to represent pelitic basement rocks, a typical host rock for economic uranium mineralization. The depth to basement is locally less than 350 metres.

Denison's recently discovered Huskie deposit is located approximately 10 km due east along strike from Henday Lake. An NI 43-101 technical report dated October, 2018 estimates the inferred resource of the Husky deposit to be 5.7 million Ibs. U3O8.

The Henday Lake property falls within the Mudjatik-Wollaston Tectonic Zone, a northeast trending structural zone along the eastern margin of the Basin. The Mudjatik-Wollaston Tectonic Zone is the NE trending high strain tectonic zone marking the boundary between the Archean gneisses and granitoids of the Mudjatik Domain to the west and Archean gneisses, metasediments, and pegmatite intrusions of the Wollaston domain to the east.

In this article, we discuss the 10 best international stocks in 2021. If you want to skip our detailed analysis of these stocks, go directly to the 5 Best International Stocks in 2021.

Diversifying your stock portfolio by increasing exposure to international companies working in high-growth areas is perhaps one of the best ways to hedge against risks, according to analysts. According to a study by consulting firm McKinsey & Company published in March 2021, the Mega 25 companies generated a collective market-capitalization growth of over $5.8 trillion. The Mega 25 includes international stocks such as Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE: BABA), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE: TSM), and Sea Limited (NYSE: SE).

Furthermore, during the fourth quarter of 2020, international stocks began to gain traction in the global stock market propelled by anticipation for COVID-19 vaccinations. The international vaccine-manufacturing stocks are likely to have benefited most from the fast-growing biotech sector. German biotech firm BioNTech SE (NASDAQ: BNTX) has gained 258%, year-to-date. On the other hand, shares of British vaccine maker AstraZeneca PLS (NASDAQ: AZN) increased 16% year-to-date.

Our Methodology

With this context in mind, here is our list of the 10 best international stocks in 2021. Most of these companies are headquartered outside of the United States and operate internationally. These stocks were selected based on their basic business fundamentals, hedge fund sentiment, and analyst ratings. The stocks were chosen and ranked based on the number of hedge fund holdings as of the end of the second quarter of 2021, based on our data of 873 hedge funds.

Why use hedge fund sentiment to choose stocks? Insider Monkey’s research was able to identify in advance a select group of hedge fund holdings that outperformed the S&P 500 ETFs. Between March 2017 and July 2021, our monthly newsletter’s stock picks returned 186.1%, vs. 100.1% for the SPY. Our stock picks outperformed the market by more than 86 percentage points (see the details here). That’s why we believe hedge fund sentiment is an extremely useful indicator that investors should pay attention to. TORONTO, Sept. 28, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — (TSXV: TVC) Three Valley Copper Corp. (“Three Valley Copper” or the “Company”) is pleased to provide a corporate and operating update on its 91.1% owned Minera Tres Valles (“MTV”) property near Salamanca, Region de Coquimbo, Chile.

Papomono Masivo Block Caving Underground Construction and Resulting Preliminary Guidance

Construction began on this project in December 2020. Papomono Masivo (“PPM”) has proven and probable reserves of approximately 102 million pounds of contained copper with an average grade of 1.51%4. The development of PPM currently is at 71% for horizontal works and 85% for vertical works and the Company’s continued expectation is that PPM will be completed end of 2021/early 2022 with the planned ramp-up of production during 2022.

“We continue to improve the development rate of this project during the month of August (the advance rate being the best month on record), and we expect the fourth quarter’s projected advance rate to be similar,” said Joe Phillips, COO of the Company. “We have completed the critical ventilation shaft and the ore pass which will further accelerate the speed of our continued advance. We remain on track to commence the caving/mining process in December 2021 or early 2022.”

The resulting progress of the PPM project has provided the Company with the opportunity to provide preliminary guidance for 2022 and 2023. Copper production is expected to significantly increase in 2022 compared to 2021’s production range of 4,500 to 5,500 tonnes as the initial construction of the PPM project concludes and mining of PPM begins during the 2022 ramp-up year. Thereafter, it is expected that annual production between 13,000 and 16,000 tonnes of copper cathode will be attained in 2023 approaching the operation’s full production capacity. The Company’s production profile includes mineralized material from both Don Gabriel and PPM during 2022 and predominantly from PPM during 2023 together with material from ENAMI and third-party miners expected during both years. Looking forward to 2022 and 2023, Cash Costs are expected to fall significantly driven by higher grades from PPM and throughput coupled with decreased capital development and other sustaining capital programs. As the Company exits 2021 and completes its budgeting process, updates to this preliminary guidance may be required.

The preliminary outlook1 for 2022 and 2023 at MTV is as follows:

  1. Preliminary guidance is based on certain estimates and assumptions, including but not limited to, mineral reserve estimates, grade and continuity of interpreted geological formations, metallurgical performance and foreign exchange rates. Please refer to the amended and restated technical report prepared by Wood Independent Mining Consultants, Inc., in respect of the Minera Tres Valles Copper Project (the “Technical Report”) dated May 27, 2021 and to the Company’s SEDAR filings for complete risk factors related to the Company and MTV.

  2. Cash Cost is a non-IFRS measure – Cash costs of production include all costs absorbed into inventory less non-cash items such as depreciation. Cash costs per pound produced are calculated by dividing the aggregate of the applicable costs by copper pounds produced.

  3. Planned capital expenditures (“CAPEX”) for 2022 and 2023 are focused primarily on open pit expansion, plant CAPEX and sustaining CAPEX of PPM for the inclined block-caving mining project. It is expected that by early 2022, the underground operation at PPM will begin production and the resulting production growth is expected to lower per unit operating costs in 2022 and 2023 as the results of this CAPEX are realized.

  4. As per the Technical Report.

Copper Porphyry Target Identified

Further to the press release on September 15, 2021 announcing the commencement of the near-mine exploration drilling program at MTV, the Company announces that it has identified a new copper porphyry target in its license area.

The target is within an area previously mapped as a late Cretaceous granitoid intrusive. The identified target shows likely hydrothermal alteration characteristics of the phyllic zone of porphyry copper deposits, determined by processing ASTER satellite data sourced from the United States Geological Survey. The characteristic minerals produced by phyllic hydrothermal alterations can be detected using ASTER data in areas without thick vegetation and/or soil cover like this part of Chile because of their spectral absorption features. When exposed at the Earth’s surface, they preferentially absorb certain frequencies of sunlight in the short-wave infrared range, and ASTER has the spectral bands to enable the detection of their resulting spectral signature.

The identified central core has dimensions of approximately 2km by 1km, which outlines the surface footprint of the target. It is surrounded by a darker shade topographically elevated rim. There is also a nearby copper deposit described as a skarn, and it is notable that copper skarns are often nearby porphyry deposits, providing another positive indicator for this target.

“John Mortimer, our exploration consultant, has identified an exciting target for the Company,” stated Michael Staresinic, President and CEO of the Company. “Copper porphyry deposits are associated with some of the largest long life copper mines in the world, with Chile hosting the greatest concentration of these deposits. This target is an example of the broader potential of this property as we continue to identify additional targets on our 46,000 hectare land package. This target forms part of our new exploration section in our corporate presentation available on our website at https://www.threevalleycopper.com.”

Following the completion of the recently announced exploration campaign focusing on 6,000 to 8,000 meters of proposed drillings near MTV’s existing mines, additional efforts will be directed towards this copper porphyry target.

Arbitration Update

In August 2021, the Company increased its ownership stake in MTV from 90.3% to 91.1% after a further opportunity to subscribe for newly issued shares of MTV. Consistent with its past actions, the minority shareholder of MTV did not participate in the subscription resulting in the dilution of their MTV ownership from 9.7% to 8.9%. Both the Company, through its 100% ownership in SRH Chile SpA, and the minority shareholder have selected their respective arbitrators, that together, with a to be agreed upon neutral third arbitrator, will form the arbitral tribunal that will adjudicate the shareholders’ dispute.

The Company remains confident in its position that the allegations made by the minority shareholder are baseless and unsubstantiated and reflect the minority shareholder’s attempt to receive preferential treatment contrary to the terms of the shareholders agreement (“SHA”). The Company and its legal counsel are of the strong and steadfast position that the claim is without merit and the Company has acted appropriately and in accordance with Chilean law, the Judicial Reorganization Agreement, the by-laws of MTV and the SHA in all respects. At this time and based on the timelines agreed to in the SHA, the Company estimates the arbitration process could take up to 10 to 12 months to complete.

Cautionary Note to United States Investors Concerning Estimates of measured, indicated and inferred mineral resources

This news release may use the terms "measured", "indicated" and "inferred" mineral resources. Historically, while such terms were recognized and required by Canadian regulations, they were not recognized by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”). The SEC has adopted amendments to its disclosure rules to modernize the mineral property disclosure requirements for issuers whose securities are registered with the SEC under the Securities and Exchange Act of 1934, as amended (the “Exchange Act”). These amendments became effective February 25, 2019 (the “SEC Modernization Rules”) with compliance required for the first fiscal year beginning on or after January 1, 2021. The SEC Modernization Rules replace the historical property disclosure requirements for mining registrants that were included in SEC Industry Guide 7, which will be rescinded from and after the required compliance date of the SEC Modernization Rules. As a result of the adoption of the SEC Modernization Rules, the SEC now recognizes estimates of “measured”, “indicated” and “inferred” mineral resources. In addition, the SEC has amended its definitions of “proven mineral reserves” and “probable mineral reserves” to be substantially similar to the corresponding Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum definitions, as required by NI 43-101. Investors are cautioned that "Inferred mineral resources" have a great amount of uncertainty as to their existence, and as to their economic and legal feasibility. It cannot be assumed that all or any part of an inferred mineral resource will ever be upgraded to a higher category. Under Canadian rules, estimates of inferred mineral resources may not form the basis of feasibility or other economic studies. United States investors are cautioned not to assume that all or any part of measured or indicated mineral resources will ever be converted into mineral reserves. United States investors are also cautioned not to assume that all or any part of an inferred mineral resource exists or is economically or legally mineable.

Vancouver, British Columbia–(Newsfile Corp. – September 27, 2021) – Quaterra Resources Inc. (TSXV: QTA) (OTCQB: QTRRF) (the "Company") is pleased to announce that it has completed an oversubscribed second tranche of its previously announced non-brokered private placement (the "Private Placement"). Stephen Goodman, President states that, "The Company appreciates the support of existing shareholders and insiders, and welcomes our new investors." Proceeds will be used to advance the company's assets, primarily its MacArthur copper oxide project in Nevada, and general working capital.

Pursuant to the closing of the second tranche, the Company has issued 12,863,669 units ("Units") at a price of US$0.06 (C$0.075) per Unit for gross proceeds of US$771,820 (C$964,775). Combined with the first tranche, the Company has raised US$2,338,170 (C$2,922,713) in the Private Placement. Due to strong demand the Company is also increasing the total offering to up to an aggregate US$2.7 million in gross proceeds, and will seek to complete a third tranche closing shortly on the same offering terms.

Each Unit consists of one common share of the Company and one share purchase warrant (a "Warrant"). Each Warrant entitles the holder to acquire one additional common share of the Company at an exercise price of US$0.10 per share for a period of three years from the date of closing. The Warrants contain a forced exercise provision if the daily volume weighted average trading price of the common shares of the Company on the TSX Venture Exchange (the "Exchange") is equal to or greater than US$0.30 for a period of 10 consecutive trading days.

The securities issued pursuant to the second tranche will be subject to a hold period expiring on January 28, 2022 in accordance with applicable securities laws.

In connection with the completion of the second tranche of the Private Placement, the Company paid a total of US$17,354 and issued 289,240 finder's warrants as finder's fees to PI Financial Corp. and Haywood Securities Inc. The finder's warrants will be exercisable at US$0.10 per share for a period of 3 years from the date of closing.

In connection with this closing of the Offering, the Company issued Units to two directors of the Company. As a result, this tranche of the Private Placement constituted a related party transaction pursuant to TSX Venture Exchange Policy 5.9 and Multilateral Instrument 61-101 ("MI 61-101"). The Company has determined that exemptions from the various requirements of TSX Venture Exchange Policy 5.9 and MI 61-101 are available for the issuance of the Units to related parties. The Company is relying on section 5.5(a) of MI 61-101 for an exemption from the formal valuation requirement and section 5.7(1)(a) of MI 61-101 for an exemption from the minority shareholder approval requirement on the basis that the fair market value of insider participation is not more than 25% of the Company's market capitalization.

In addition, the Company announces that it has granted incentive stock options pursuant to its stock option plan to various directors and officers of the Company, to purchase up to an aggregate of 4,500,000 common shares of the Company. The stock options are exercisable at a price of $0.11 per share and expire five years from the date of grant.

We look forward to keeping our stakeholders apprised as we continue to advance this important project."
